Agonistic behaviour and feed efficiency in juvenile Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus ArchiMer
De Verdal, Hugues; O'Connell, Catherine Maeve; Mekkawy, Wagdy; Vandeputte, Marc; Chatain, Beatrice; Bégout, Marie-laure; Benzie, John A.h..
Given the strong effects of behavioural hierarchies on growth in many cultured species and the key role of feed efficiency in aquaculture economics, understanding the nature of the interaction of these variables is important for the sustainability of aquaculture. The relationship between agonistic behaviour, growth and feed efficiency in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, was studied by rearing 120 fish in eight aquaria. Fish were video-recorded to estimate the occurrence of agonistic behaviour during a fasting and a refeeding period. Growth, feed intake and feed conversion efficiency (FCE - calculated as the inverse of feed conversion ratio (FCR)) were subsequently measured individually for each fish. Fish showed 58% less agonistic traits during the...

Development of empirical regression equations for predicting the performances of disc plough and harrow in clay-loam soil CIGR Journal
Oduma, Okechukwu.
Abstract: The regression equations for predicting the performances of plough and harrow implements in clay – loam soil in South – East agro – ecological region of Nigeria were developed. This is to enable farmers, farm managers and users of farm machinery assess and select proper machinery based on soil type/ condition for good performance of the machine and to avoid unnecessary breakdown/failures or energy loss during operation and generally to optimize production at minimum cost. Results showed that for plough operated in clay – loam soil, the regression equation that can predict its various performance indicators are: field efficiency, Y = 0.067x2 – 0.7733x + 89.283; effective field capacity, Y = 0.0864x2 – 1.4406x +6.8173; theoretical field capacity, Y...

EFFECT OF SOIL PYSICAL PROPERTIS ON PERFORMANCE OF AGRICULTURAL FIELD MACHINERIES IN THE TROPICAL REGION OF NIGERIA CIGR Journal
Oduma, Okechukwu.
Abstract: A research was conducted at the demonstration farms of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State and Veterinary School, Ezzangbo, Ebnonyi State in 2017; to assess the effect of soil physical properties on the performance of some selected agricultural field machineries in the tropical region of Nigeria. Results of the effect of the soil textural class/ type on implement performances revealed that the average efficiency of the implements was highest on sandy-clay soil with average efficiency of 87.35% and the least was loamy-sandy soil that gave an average efficiency of 86.21%. It was observable from the results that the highest average moisture content of 17.7% was recorded for all the \soils before tillage; but after tillage;...

KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY AND INNOVATIONS AS FACTORS OF AGRARIAN COMPETITIVENESS AgEcon
Mihailovic, Branko; Hamovic, Vladana; Parausic, Vesna.
Today, more than ever, development of agriculture leans on science research results and their practical application. Research in the field of agriculture is conducted by large network of public institutions, institutes and universities are mostly directed toward improvement of production. Economical research, at the level of husbandry, market analysis, or analysis and estimations of economic policy is poorly developed. Profitability of agriculture and food industry should be improved and supported by adequate research and application of gained results. Experience acquired in research and education systems of post-communist countries can help these countries change their economy towards knowledge, innovations and new technologies. But, in spite of great...

Modeling Hydraulic Performance of a Drip Irrigation Network Directly Coupled to a Photovoltaic Pumping System CIGR Journal
El Aissaoui, Abdellah; Hajar, El Khalfi.
Drip irrigation network coupled to photovoltaic pumping system presents an alternative solution that can efficiently improves use of water and energy by small and medium irrigated farming systems compared to conventional energy use for water pumping. Standalone photovoltaic water pumping systems (PVWPS) coupled to drip irrigation network constitute the best technico-economical solution compared to PVWPS using electrical or water storage demanding additional cost for the storage device. However, the standalone PVWPS need adequate process control to optimally be coupled with a drip irrigation network as adaptation between variable irradiance inputs and hydraulic outputs are needed to overcome problem of emission uniformity instability that can affect the...

Performance study of a standalone direct pumping photovoltaic system used for drip irrigation CIGR Journal
HARKANI, ASSIA; El Aissaoui, Abdellah.
This paper aims to study performances of a standalone photovoltaic pumping system confronted to actual behaviour of incident irradiance. The system is based on a photovoltaic generator, a MPPT/ DC-DC converter, and a diaphragm DC motor pump connected to calibrated ( Flow versus Pressure) orifices, simulating small drip irrigation network, mounted in parallel scheme to vary the pump operating point according to timely varied irradiance. The result showed  that daily trend of solar irradiance influence considerably operating behaviour of the pump, consequently the performance of the standalone PV system is affected as there is inadequation between charges of the PV generator and the DC pump.  The hydraulic effeciency trends showed a dispersion and varying...
